Friday, December 5, 2014: Five
Months and Counting
During the night I realized that Tommy had joined me on the
bed and was sleeping soundly. I wondered when the first wakeup call would be.
It didn’t occur until 6:15. She sat at the bottom of the bed and just kept
calling out until I acknowledged her. Then we went through our usual morning
dance of Tommy asking me to get up and me waiting until the heat came on. At
one point I did let her know that today she had been with me for five months
and how happy I was to have her living here.
She has an uncanny sense of when the heat will kick in. If
she’s on the bed, she jumps down less than 10 seconds before the heat pump
starts. She knows it the breakfast signal and she’s always ready for it. She
waits either by the bed or the door and “reminds” me to get up until I finally
am out of bed. Then it’s off to the kitchen to supervise her food preparations.
Once she was fed I went into the study to print puzzles and
handle the day’s posts. I heard Tommy whimpering in the living room. I hadn’t opened
the blinds so I thought that was the problem. Once opened she still stayed
under the chair, so I went over and after some calm talking got her to come
back out. I’m not sure what spooked her this time, but it looked like the
problem was solved.
I went back to the study to finish and a few minutes later
Tommy showed up. She sat on the chair next to the desk and then jumped up on
the desk. We spent a little time together, but then she left and I quickly
finished work so I could join her in the living room.
When I went out she was waiting for me and once I petted her
and talked to her, she went into the bedroom to lay on the bed and catch a
quick nap. I completed the rest of the morning chores and noticed that she had
eaten some of the dry food in the little bowl in the bungalow. She hadn’t been
eating much dry food, so I decided to spread it out. Instead of having one
bowl, I changed to two smaller bowls and put the food in two different
rooms. Now she was eating a bit more
from each of the bowls.
I got a special email offer from a company I’ve used for
business cards, so I ordered Christmas cards with Tommy’s photo one them. They
will be here next week, in plenty of time to get them out before Christmas.
Tommy spent much of the morning either in the bedroom or in
the bedroom closet. I guess that I was making too much noise and watching
programs that she didn’t like, for example American
Horror Story. She usually leaves the room when I watch that one. I spent
much of the late morning and early afternoon doing laundry and ironing.
The afternoon was spent by Tommy on the sofa. We had a very
quiet day. Tommy was interested in watching me assemble a Lego reindeer. I also
got the DVR down to a manageable level and then got ready for the choir
concert. I had already put out Tommy’s dinner to get rid of the chill from the
refrigerator. I barely started using the fork to break the food up into smaller
bites when Tommy showed up at my feet ready for dinner.
As she ate I finished up some paperwork and waited for my
dinner to be ready. Once dinner was completed, I finished getting ready while Tommy
watched from the sofa. I said god bye and left for the concert, but left the
T.V. on ABC Family. I thought that might be a pleasant change for Tommy. If she
didn’t like it, she could always go to the bedroom.
When I returned home Tommy was glad to see me. We played a
little, but I could tell that she just wanted to chill. When it was time for bed,
Tommy was up on her bungalow and I said good night after helping her see that
my glasses made the lights on the wall that she liked.
After I got into bed and turned off the lights, Tommy jumped
up on the bed and ate her treat. She then left for the living room to amuse
herself. A woke up a little while later when Tommy came back up on the bed and
curled up by my feet. Although we hadn’t done very much today, I think we both
enjoyed just hanging around each other.
