I awoke around 5:00 and saw Tommy curled up in her usual spot
on the bed. She must have sensed that I was awake and she took that as her cue
that it was time to start checking to see if it was time for her breakfast. We
spent the next hour and a half checking on this until the heat pump finally
came on and Tommy bounded out to the kitchen.
After she was fed and I had completed all my morning “Tommy
tasks,” I emptied the dishwasher and did some tidying up around the kitchen. I
was trying to put the rest of Tommy’s cans of food in the cart that has become
her pantry, and the curious young lady kept trying to “help.” I patiently kept
moving her out of the way, and she kept coming back and kept knocking over the
cans.
The last time I tried to move her, she attempted to bite and
that time I schussed her away a bit more loudly. She finally got the hint and
went in the bedroom. Once I finished, I went to find her, but she let me know
that she was still upset with my actions. I decided to let her calm down and
went in the living room to read.
After a while, Tommy came up and used her quiet mews to let
me know that she was ready to accept my apology. We spent some time on the sofa
and since the sun was up, there were balls of light on the sofa from my
glasses. Because I didn’t want Tommy to claw on the sofa, I moved my head so
the light would fall on my arm. Tommy
had fun trying to capture the light.
When she tired of that game, she moved to the window, but let
me know that she still wanted attention. I got out the fleece teaser and she
spent some time playing with that before moving to the bedroom. I also went to the bedroom and changed the
sheets under Tommy’s watchful eye.
When I finished, Tommy went to her scratching post and it
seemed that she was looking for something. Knowing what game we’ve played with
the post, I went and got the laser pointer.
We spent some time playing with the laser pointer. Tommy would pull
herself around the post, jump up and down that bungalow chasing after the
little red dot. When she tired of
playing I went and started the laundry and worked on the daily posts.
Tommy came out later to check on the laundry. She seemed to
always check when it was between cycles and it was quiet. Once it started again,
she’d head back to the bedroom. Later she came running out and went to the
balcony door. Something must have caught her eye from the bedroom window and
she needed a better viewing spot that the balcony door afforded. Once she was
finished, it was back to the bedroom for some R & R.
I stopped in later to get something from the bedroom and saw
that Tommy’s bedroom water bowl was in a new place and there was some water on
her rug. I guess that I had put it in the wrong spot. While she was “otherwise
engaged” I thought that it might be a god time to put away the Thanksgiving
decorations and start on decorating for December.
Everything was going well until I opened the study closet to
put away and get out boxes. I can’t believe she heard the door open from across
the condo. As I tried to handle the boxes, Tommy kept trying to explore the new
areas of the closet that were suddenly open. It was difficult to move boxes
around while having Tommy underfoot. I tried putting out the holiday stuffed
toys thinking either those or the box would keep her busy, but the lure of the
closet was too much.
Once all the boxes were out, I put out a few things. I’m
going to take my time this week and see which ones are safe. I’ve already put
Grandma Felker’s little crocheted stockings down low where Tommy can play with
them. The glass ornaments probably won’t
be put out this year, and I’m debating whether to hand the M&M lights.
After putting out the first batch, it was time for Tommy’s
teeth to be brushed. She sat by the chair while I got everything organized. She
saw the brush and didn’t bolt, good sign #1. She let me pick her up and put her
on the table, good sign #2. Although she still doesn’t “open up” like I do at
the dentist, at least she let me complete the task without too much squirming,
good sign #3. Once we were finished, she got her treat and lunch of wheat
grass.
When she finished, she went back to the bedroom to nap on the
bed to regain her strength after such a trying ordeal! I spent the afternoon
reading and watching the Packer game. When it was time for dinner Tommy heard
me prepping her food and came running. She ate half of it and saved the rest
for later. She then returned to the bedroom for an after dinner nap.
I did the dishes and then played with her in the bedroom with
the laser pointer. Later she came to
investigate what I was doing, but the minute I moved to the keyboard and
started singing, she left. (I thought she was beginning to like my singing!)
When I finished I went and let her know that the coast was clear. She came back
out and finished her meal.
I was working on the computer and Tommy came in to let me
know that she was up and ready for attention, so I left what I was doing
because I had been summoned. We finished the evening playing and then just hanging
out. When it was time for bed, Tommy was already in the box of the bungalow.
When I went to say good night, she hissed and tried swatting my face. I decided
to just leave her alone and go to bed. I’m not sure what her problem is, but I’m
sure it will be resolved by the morning when she wants breakfast.
