Tuesday, July 22, 2014: New Noises

Tommy didn't stir enough to wake me up until 6:40 this morning. Either there were enough other distractions that she didn't need to wake me for her own amusement or she’s learned to be rather stealthy while it’s dark and I’m sleeping in bed.  Either way, I enjoyed the extended time.  Tommy finally decided to rouse me at 6:40 and expected her morning petting.
After completing the morning routines I headed for the bathroom to brush my teeth. When Tommy came to investigate and I asked if it was okay that I brush my teeth, I swear it sounded like she said “No!” I pretended that she agreed with me and let her know that my personal hygiene was important.
We then spent a short amount of time playing, but I could tell that she just wasn't in a playful mood. We headed into the study to begin the daily computer time. I went through some mail and knew that some pieces (financial information and solicitations for additional credit needed to be shredded. I wasn't sure how she’d handle the new sound, but since she was in a safe place, sitting in front of me on the desk, I thought I’d give it a try.
When I put the papers in the shredder, she jumped a little, but was very curious about the noise. Later when I found some other papers that needed shredding I tried again and this time she was just curious. Both times when the noise stopped she leaned her head way under the desk to try to find out what happened to the noise.
Tommy heard several other new noises while we were working on the computer and she made sure to investigate each one. The plastic covers on the ends of the blind cords were tapping against the open window, but she couldn't get to them, so she lost interest in them. When the balcony maintenance crew again moved down using their motorized platform, Tommy let out her usual “ferocious” low growl while remaining secure on the desk in front of me. She couldn't figure out the automatic sprinklers down on the dog run and gave a quizzical mew to let me know that she was puzzled.
With the warmer weather it seems that Tommy’s energy level is much lower.  She took a relatively long nap this morning after a little play session and I was able to get a lot of paperwork done.  Of course, when nap time was over for her, so was work time for me. We decided to break for lunch.  I had a braunschweiger sandwich and I know the smell is one that entices Tommy. As I ate at the dining room table Tommy climbed up onto her chair and watched. When she tried to get on the table I said “No,” and she backed down.  She of course immediately got a treat. (Sometimes I think ahead!) She stayed on the chair and watched without ever venturing onto the table again. When I finished there’s was a second treat and much praise. Who says cats can’t be trained, or is it she who’s training me?
As the temperature increased and the lake breeze decreased, it was time to close up the condo and turn on the air conditioning. The rest of the afternoon was spent lounging and then it was time to get ready to leave. Tommy was very happy to spend some time in the closet as I got ready and then I was off to my meeting and she could do whatever it is she does when I’m not home.
When I returned from my meeting there was the usual chastisement followed by treats. I don’t know what Tommy did while I was away, but she sure was tired. We headed to bed without any trouble.
