Saturday, January 3, 2015: Twenty-six Weeks and Going Strong

Tommy woke up (and woke me up) a little before the heat pump came on. She then got fed and I decided to finish up posts right away. After eating Tommy came in to investigate, but quickly left so I could finish. With the postings done, I went to complete my other morning Tommy chores. I gave her fresh water, added some more dry food to her bowls and then cleared her litter box of “offerings.”
I barely finished and returned to the living/dining area when Tommy went to use her litter box. I swear that in the morning she waits until it’s been cleared before using it. While she took care of her business, I made coffee. As it started to perk, Tommy reappeared and wanted to play. I brought out her worm teaser which we hadn’t used for a few days and she played with it for only a few minutes.  It appeared that I had chosen the wrong toy.
I tried her little mouse teaser and found that that was the preferred toy for this session.  We played for quite a while with Tommy flipping on her back at times or diving head first into the tissue pile. Having a small mouse on a thin wire makes for enough varied movement to keep her engaged for quite some time.  I do have a responsibility to make sure that the wire is always loose enough so she can’t hurt herself and that she doesn’t try to swallow the mouse. It’s the one teaser that gets put away in a cupboard when we’re not using it.
I sat to have some coffee and continue reading. Tommy watched out the window as the wind blew the light snow around. When she tired of that, she went to the bedroom for a morning nap.  I started the laundry, renewed her cat license, and work on postings.
Throughout the day we continued the same way, Tommy took a nap while I worked on chores and paperwork. Whenever Tommy needed/wanted something, she would make an appearance. If she wanted to play, she would park herself on her tissue paper pile. When she wanted attention she would jump up on the desk and lay in front of me, or if I was somewhere else she would follow me around and plop down in front of me whenever I stopped. If she was hungry, she would sit on the kitchen floor unless her grass was out and then she would just eat a few bites.
As I got ready to relax after doing the dishes, I made a pot of tea and changed into pajamas. Tommy made sure that we had another play session and petting time. She spread out on the floor next to the bed and called out until I came down and joined her on the floor. Once I started petting her, she rolled over on her back so I could scratch her tummy and neck. Her purring told me that I was providing the needed attention.
We headed to bed to read and relax. Tommy jumped up on the bungalow to oversee what I was doing. When I got into bed and started reading, Tommy joined me on the bed. She first checked out the area near me to see if I had put out her snack (which I hadn’t yet because it was too early) and then curled up in her usual spot on the bed. I finished reading my book while enjoying the tea.
When I was finished I watched the news and put out Tommy’s snack.  She woke up when she heard the treat drawer open and came up to eat her snack. Once we were both done we settled back in our respective places on the bed and went to sleep. After a half year together we both knew the routine pretty well.
