I don’t think Tommy
understands Daylight Savings Time. I turned the clocks back an hour before
going to bed and laughingly mentioned to Tommy that we’d be getting up at the
same time, but it would be an hour later.
She doesn’t understand time, so I knew we were headed for an early
morning.
Our day began at 4:00 A.M.
which was about when Tommy normally started our “wake me up” routine. I thought
that maybe we’d be okay. Tommy continued the wake up at 5:00 in 15-20 minute
intervals. By 6:00 we were at 5 minute (or less) intervals. She was hungry and knew that this was 24
hours since her previous breakfast.
By 6:20 A.M. I knew that I was
fighting a losing battle and finally gave up and got up. Tommy got her
breakfast and I got extra time to do my chores. Since I had forgotten to do my
beginning of the month checking account entries, I was able to complete that
task.
Once Tommy was done eating,
she came into the study to remind me that she still hadn't had her morning
grass. She ate a little and then proceeded to tip the container over and water
the carpet. I cleaned up her mess and
gave her another chance. In less time then it took for me to put the grass down
and turn around, the container was again tipped and what little water was still
in the container was now on the carpet. It was time to put the grass away for
the day.
Tommy went into the bedroom
and I went to finally make coffee. Suddenly there was a noise in the bedroom. I
went running in to see what had happened.
Since I had been in a hurry to start the day, I still had a glass of
water on the side table by the bed. It
was now on the floor, so there I was cleaning up another water spill on a
carpet.
I looked at Tommy and asked
why she was having this water issue today.
Her answer was to run away. I’m sure that she caught the frustration in
my voice. When I finished and came back
out to the living room, I heard Tommy’s “quiet mew” which I took as her
apology.
We spent some time on the large
rug apologizing and showing affection to each other. I then knew that since I had been dealing
with water, I might as well scrub out her litter box. Tommy curled up in her
bed while I worked.
When Tommy came looking for
me, I knew that she was in a good mood and it would be a time to clean her
teeth. She hadn't cared for the brush, so I thought I’d try to “finger brush.”
It’s really a finger cap with a raised “bristle” area. Tommy let me pick her up and put her on the
table. She seemed pretty calm and seemed to be okay with me “handling’ her.
Once we started the actual
brushing, she wasn't as cooperative as she had been with the brush, but she did
let me finish her side and front teeth. She didn't squirm too much and we were
able to accomplish the task in a relatively short time. When I put her down I put some treats in
front of her and of course praised her for letting me clean her teeth.
I was going to attend a tour,
so that was another reason why I thought that it had been a good time to clean
her teeth. After I finished getting ready, I said good bye and hoped that Tommy
would be in a good mood when I returned.
When I returned, Tommy ran
across the living room to greet me. I
gave her a treat, but she wouldn't’ eat it. She was ready for dinner, but unfortunately
dinner was not ready for her. I put the
dry food dish near her but she didn't want to eat it.
I hadn't eaten anything yet
during the day, so I grabbed a snack and sat down on the sofa. Tommy jumped up
by me to see what I was eating. She didn't care for it, and let me know by trying to bite me. I guess she wasn't in a good mood. She went and sat on her
rug, and ate the treat that she had previously refused.
When it was time for dinner
Tommy didn’t immediately run to the bowl.
Once she got there she ate about half of it and then went to the
bedroom. Since I wanted to stretch out, I also went to the bedroom, but took
along a light fleece blanket for a little extra warmth.
When I got on the bed and
under the fleece, Tommy jumped up to investigate the “new” blanket. Since she
likes fleece, I wasn't surprised by her interest. What did surprise me was when she curled up on the fleece right next to my legs. She slept there for about 30-40 minutes until
she heard a noise.
She jumped down to investigate,
but then curled up on her rug for a nap. When I left to do the dishes, Tommy
came out to make sure that I didn't wash her dinner bowl until she was finished. Once I was able to wash all the dishes, we moved to the living room
to have an extended play period with the laser pointer. She still gets on her
back every so often and expects to be able to continue playing with the red
dot.
Once she tired of playing, she
hunkered down on her rug in the living room. I finished up a few things and
then closed everything for the night. Since we had started the day early, I was
ready to go to bed earlier than usual. I
don’t know if Tommy’s also ready for an early bedtime, or if she got enough
sleep during the day to give her a second wind.
