My furry “alarm” didn't wake
me for the first time until after 5:00 A.M. Tommy came up by my head and
greeted me before noticing the treat on the bed which she then devoured. She
then jumped off the bed as if she knew that it was too early to expect any
action on my part.
Around 6:00, Tommy again came
up to greet me, but this time she laid down near my head for a short time. I
told her that it was still too early, but I’d compromise today and get up at
6:30. Wouldn't you know it, at 6:25 she was back on the bed and this time put
her cold little wet nose on my nose. I was time for me to get her breakfast
ready.
As I put her breakfast in her
bowl, Tommy rubbed against my legs. I’m sure this is her way of showing her
affection and appreciation. She also stretched out with her hind paws on the
floor and her fore paws on the cupboards to make sure that I was actually doing
what I was supposed to be doing and doing it efficiently and quickly.
Once she was eating I could
make coffee and print the morning puzzles.
As I finished, Tommy came into the study to remind me that she was
waiting for her grass. I brought it out
and she started eating it. She still
tried to tip the container over. I
thought that maybe she was trying to get at the bottoms of the blades of grass,
but I found her playing with the empty container. She wasn't very happy when I took the
container and grass away for the day.
After breakfast Tommy hung
around for a while, but then strolled into the bedroom I assumed for her early
morning nap. When I went to go to the bathroom to handle the litter box, I
found her sitting on the bed. She likes fleece, so the fleece blanket on the
bed may be her new “go to” spot. I made sure to pet her and let her know that
she of course was welcome to enjoy the blanket (as if she needed permission,
what was I thinking!).
When I went into the bedroom
to put some things away, Tommy moved to the floor and stared at me. I figured
that since she wasn't on the bed, it would be a good time to make the bed. As I made the bed Tommy went to the living
room and noticed that some things had moved.
I was going to be putting all the balcony furniture in storage.
As I put some items in the
closet and moved others to the door to be taken to the storage locker, Tommy
just kept supervising. Once that was done, Tommy played with her yellow ball
and then moved to check out the balcony view. A hawk swooped by near the
building and Tommy was on alert. Once it left the area, Tommy went back to the
bedroom and curled up on the fleece blanket on the bed.
The rest of the day Tommy
spent napping, playing and occasionally snacking. I accomplished a lot, but missed
having time with Tommy. I needed to vote, so in the middle of the afternoon, I
left and also went for a walk.
When I returned Tommy and I
got to spend some time playing and then it was time for dinner. After dinner I practiced for choir and then
it was time for Tommy to have her teeth brushed. She let me put her on the
table and wasn't as “squirmy.” She did
try to escape, but she also did let me brush her teeth. She always starts by clamping down her jaw,
but then loosens up once the brush makes contact.
After we finished, Tommy got
her treat, petting, and lots of positive reinforcement. I love that she’s starting to be more
comfortable with the brushing. She also
lets me brush her fur, so I think it’s going well.
I left for choir and when I
returned, Tommy was waiting near the door. After her greeting, petting, and
treat, we had time to play. As I watched the news, Tommy could tell that I wasn't happy and came over and rubbed against my legs. I love that she can sense my
mood and usually knows what I need.
As I got ready for bed, I made
sure to thank Tommy for understanding. She was still in the living room, but I
knew that sooner or later she’d come into the bedroom. The only question was
where she would sleep. Would she sleep on
the top of her bungalow, on her rug, or on her new go to spot on the fleece
blanket on the bed?
